What is a prebiotic?
A prebiotic is defined by as ‘a selectively fermented ingredient that results in specific changes, in the composition and/or activity of the gastrointestinal microbiota, thus conferring benefit(s) upon the host’ (Gibson et al. 2010).
Prebiotics are natural, non-digestible fibers that pass undigested through the upper part of the gastrointestinal tract and stimulate the growth or activity of advantageous bacteria that colonize the large bowel by acting as substrate for them.
What is the difference between a probiotic and a prebiotic?
A probiotic is a preparation of live bacteria as we find in yoghurt, dairy and supplements which can survive in the gut and thereby exert a health benefit. A prebiotic is a special type of dietary fibre which is not digested by the host and therefore reaches the colon where it is selectively utilised by the good bacteria that are naturally present in the colon, thereby improving the ratio of the good bacteria to the bad bacteria which will in turn lead to health benefits.
Can I take prebiotics if I’m already consuming probiotics?
Yes. The benefit of taking prebiotics with probiotics is that you are effectively covering both grounds; replenishing the body's good bacteria, and also feeding good bacteria already present in the gut. In simple terms it is like giving someone a bunch of flowers, along with flower food to keep them flourishing for longer.

Where else can I get prebiotics?
Some foods such as the Jerusalem artichoke, chicory root, onions, garlic, leeks and asparagus naturally contain prebiotic as do some supplements. You need to consume much more of the food sources to achieve beneficial effects similar to those obtained using just 14mL of Beeotic.
Is Beeotic a food?

While it looks and tastes just like regular honey, this honey has been demonstrated to contains a specific mixture of Honey Oligosaccharides (HOS). These HOS are indigestible by humans but are appear to be key in driving the therapeutic, prebiotic effects.
You might notice that Beeotic is labelled a little differently to other honeys - it's is different, as its prebiotic content has been shown to improve the good-to-bad bacteria ratio in your gut. Beeotic is tested, packaged, labelled and sold as a medicine.
What are Beeotic’s ingredients?
Beeotic is 100% pure Australian honey. The name ‘Beeotic’ comes from the incredible natural phenomenon in which, during the process of converting nectar into honey, bees add special enzymes that help create prebiotic sugars in conjunction with their own diverse gut microbiota.
Through extensive research and significant investment into industry-first technology, we are now able to harness this incredible power of the bees to launch the world’s first clinically-tested prebiotic honey.
How do I know the product claims are true?
Beeotic has been many years in the making, with research beginning in 2009 and the first clinical study conducted through the University of New South Wales in 2012 to assess the prebiotic health potential of select Australian honeys.
Whilst the scientific community has long believed honey to beneficial for digestion, until this time there had never been any human clinical studies to demonstrate the therapeutic prebiotic effect. The clinical study showed that particular honey types significantly raised the levels of good bacteria bacteria, Lactobacillus and Bifidobacteria, while also suppressing Clostridium in the digestive tract. Added to this, levels of ‘good’ bacteria decreased once the participants stopped taking the honey for a period of time.
Interestingly, not all honey has the same prebiotic qualities. Understanding this, Capilano invested in further scientific testing to develop a methodology to identify and test Australian honey for its prebiotic content. Now, every batch of Beeotic honey is tested by an independent laboratory to guarantee its prebiotic content, allowing us to offer a pure 100% natural prebiotic product for our consumers.
