Manuka Honey

Australia's sundrenched, rugged country produces some of the most active Manuka in the world. Our iconically warmer climate and wider variety of Manuka blossoms gives Aussie Manuka honey a sweeter, smoother taste.

What is Manuka Honey?

Manuka honey comes from the Leptospermum tree. This tree is native to Australia and New Zealand, and the indigenous people from both countries have used Manuka for its healing properties for centuries.

These healing properties have more recently been a focus for many clinical studies. Now that the value of Manuka is understood around the world, Manuka Honey is enjoyed by families as a natural source of vitality.

Australian Manuka vs. NZ Manuka

Rugby, pavlova, Russell Crowe… we Aussies love to get competitive with our neighbours across the ditch. But the rivalry we care most about at Capilano is: who produces the best Manuka Honey?

Well, for starters, Australia has 84 species of Leptospermum. New Zealand only has one. Meaning we can produce Manuka honey with the same or, in some cases, more activity than Manuka from New Zealand. Recent research out of the University of Technology, Sydney backs this up.

Manuka Honey ratings explained

The activity level, or strength, of Manuka Honey can be rated using several different measurements.

Unique Manuka Factor (UMF) is used to rate Manuka Honey in New Zealand, while methylglyoxal (MGO) and non-peroxide activity (NPA) measurements are typically used globally.

Capilano uses the MGO ratings to identify the activity level in our Manuka Honeys through independent testing.

MGO RatingUMF or NPA Equivalent
MGO 30+2.7+
MGO 85+5+

Australian Manuka Mark of Authenticity

Developed by Australia's leading Manuka scientists, the Australian Manuka 'Mark of Authenticity' can only be displayed by producers, packers, retailers and exporters who have met strict independent testing criteria.

To give customers confidence that they are buying 100% authentic Australian Manuka honey, The Australian Manuka Honey Association has developed a new, revolutionary industry standard that requires Australian Manuka must be independently tested by a registered laboratory to ensure Methylglyoxal (MGO) and Dihydroxyacetone (DHA) is present in the honey.
