Just like unwell humans need antibiotics, sometimes so do unwell bees. However, there is only one registered bee antibiotic that is approved for use in Australia called Oxytetracycline Hydrochloride (OTC), which must be prescribed by a veterinary physician.
While OTC is fully approved for use and has no proven harmful effects, Australia has a regulated protective maximum residue limit for honey containing very low levels of OTC. As such, all Capilano beekeepers are required to declare their OTC usage in accordance with Australian food and produce laws.
Capilano proudly work with AHBIC and other peak industry bodies to encourage, and educate beekeepers on best practice hive management to minimise the risk of bee disease and reduce the need for antibiotics.
